Coat of Many Colours
Theme is trust and betrayal between Man and Nature as evidenced in a Rabbinic story of this coat, hand-painted with birds and animals, that was passed from Adam and Eve to Noah to Nimrod and then to Esau and to Jacob and received by Joseph.
It is a Midrashic commentary on the Biblical story that is picked up and reinterpreted over generations. This cloak at times engendered trust between Nature and Man. For example, Noah used this cloak to persuade the animals into the Ark. However, at other times, this trust is betrayed. For example, Nimrod used the garment to lure the animals to him to club them to death.
This fluctuating relationship to the coat, epitomises the ambivalence that underlies our current relationship to the environment. I am interested in passing the baton from generation to generation and to reinterpret and reinvigorate this cloak as a cloak of trust and as a force for good and so that it can pass down the generations and serve to form a protective and healing covering over all of creation. The coat disappears from the narrative with Joseph.
