Space
The Overview Effect
In this group of small, circular 'Planet' paintings, I explore Earth from the perspective of an Astronaut in Space.
Here, I adopt this 'overview effect'; often reported by Astronauts as the experience of seeing first hand the reality of Earth in space. From this perspective, it is immediately understood to be a tiny, fragile ball of life, 'hanging in the void', shielded and nourished by a paper-thin atmosphere.
From Space, national boundaries vanish, the conflicts that divide people become less important and the imperative to create a whole Planet society to protect and care for Earth becomes obvious.
I find visual connections between the micro and the macro; these paintings are rooted in the observable world and in the mysteries that are unknowable, and which point to the existence of something greater.
Informed by both satellite imagery and microscopic imagery; I explore connections that are overt and those that are beyond literal understanding.
